LIBS for Fluid Analysis: Monitoring Boron in Coolants
In a recent application of AtomTrace’s Sci-Trace, we demonstrated its effectiveness in analyzing complex fluid samples (specifically coolants) quickly, directly, and without the need for chemical preparation.
To facilitate measurement, each liquid sample was first absorbed into ashless filter paper, allowing for consistent application and minimal background interference during analysis.

LIBS is particularly well-suited for the detection of Boron (B), which is a key element commonly present in coolants due to its role in stabilizing pH and preventing corrosion. For this reason, Boron was a primary focus of the study. In addition to this, other elements such as Sodium (Na) were also analyzed to better understand the overall chemical composition and condition of the fluids.

Our Sci-Trace proved especially effective in capturing distinct signal differences across various samples, including fresh and used fluids, as well as fluids from different sources. As shown in the spectral comparisons, variations in Boron intensity were clearly visible, demonstrating AtomTrace’s LIBS solution’s sensitivity to elemental concentration changes.
By allowing rapid and localized elemental analysis, Sci-Trace enables users to measure Boron content before and after use, offering valuable insight for process optimization and fluid lifetime assessment. Since Boron is difficult to quantify by many conventional methods, LIBS presents a practical and highly responsive alternative.
This application highlights Sci-Trace as a powerful diagnostic tool for evaluating coolants, with significant potential in R&D, quality control, and predictive maintenance across automotive, energy, and machinery sectors.
