Bringing Optics to Life: A Visit from Masaryk University Students
This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of master’s students from the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University, specializing in Optics and Optometry, to our company. Their visit wasn’t just a tour — it was an opportunity to see how optics and photonics translate into real-world applications.
Two of our talented optomechanics, who once studied in the very same program, were excited to show how dynamic and hands-on this field can be. At AtomTrace, each day brings new challenges, experiments, and discoveries.
During the visit, we introduced the students to several core technologies and concepts in action. We began by exploring microscopic imaging, using the display of a smartphone as a teaching aid. Through high-magnification views of individual pixels, we explained how RGB color composition works and how it relates to light wavelengths—a great way to connect textbook knowledge to real-world devices.

Next, we moved on to the heart of our work: lasers. To give students a true inside look, we removed the protective covers of a laser head, revealing the internal components and showing how each part contributes to the overall function. This explanation helped demystify the complexity of laser technology and made it easier to understand how everything fits and works together.

One of the highlights of the visit was a live demonstration of LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy). We walked the students through how this technique uses powerful laser pulses to analyze the elemental composition of various materials. Watching LIBS in action in a real lab setting helped the group grasp the scientific and industrial importance of this method.

Finally, we talked about the role of optomechanics and what it looks like in practice. From assembling precision instruments to aligning complex optical systems, we painted a clear picture of the skills and problem-solving involved. Our goal was to share not only what we do, but also why we love doing it—and perhaps inspire the next generation of optomechanics in the process.
We’re always on the lookout for new talent in this field, and we hope this visit inspired a few future experts to see optics from a new perspective.
